For when you need a wall mounted plant shelf to let the bits dangle
I’m going to start by admitting something, this design isn’t my inspiration, I saw it somewhere on the internet, though I can’t remember where and recreated it from memory. I have no idea how big the original was, how strong it was, or even what it was made of. All I know is that I liked the concept and it would be a fun exercise for me to try and make from a literal picture in my head. Below is a couple attempts to get to a finished product and some of my thoughts along the way. Plus it’s whimsical and fun! Think, decoration for kids rooms. I can make it in lots of colors, if you need a pop, rainbow hues, or even a pearlescent blue/green hue that is, quite awesome.

The large section of the shelf is perfectly sized to hold a 4-inch planter, which can house a variety of small houseplants, from vibrant ferns to delicate African violets. Meanwhile, the smaller section is customized for a bespoke succulent planter, complete with a drainage tray. This thoughtful addition ensures that succulents, known for their need for excellent drainage, thrive without the risk of water accumulation.
Functional Details and Specifications
Constructed from high-quality and sturdy materials, the shelf boasts durability and a clean, modern look that complements its organic form. The materials are selected not only for their strength and longevity but also for their environmental sustainability, aligning with the eco-conscious values of many modern consumers. Indeed this is made from PLA which is a much more eco-friendly, corn based polymer. Additionally, the shelf is water resistant, making it suitable for accommodating plants with varying watering needs without risk to the structure or aesthetics of the shelf.
The cloud shelf’s installation is streamlined with user-friendly mounting hardware that ensures a secure and stable attachment to the wall. Just two screws, one into a stud, and you’re done. This setup supports the weight of the plants and the soil efficiently, allowing for peace of mind even in homes with active pets or children.
In terms of dimensions, the cloud shelf is designed to be compact yet spacious enough to make a statement. It fits well in a variety of spaces, from small apartments to larger homes, offering a versatile solution for anyone looking to add a touch of greenery to their living environment.
The shelf measures 287 millimeters in width, 267 millimeters in height, and 148 millimeters in depth, which converts to approximately 11.3 inches wide, 10.5 inches high, and 5.8 inches deep.
Ideal Plants for the Shelf
Choosing the right plants for the cloud-shaped plant shelf is key to maximizing its aesthetic and functional potential. This shelf, specifically designed with plant health and display in mind, includes integrated drain trays in both sections, ensuring that excess water can be efficiently managed to prevent root rot and maintain optimal soil conditions. The drain trays are removable and have built in raised sections to allow water to drain out of the planter, seen above is the propagation planter and tray.
For the Larger Section: The larger area of the shelf is ideally suited for small succulents with dangling growth habits. Plants such as String of Pearls, String of Bananas, or Burro's Tail would be perfect for this section. Their trailing vines will elegantly drape over the edges of the shelf, mimicking the soft, flowing forms of clouds. These succulents not only bring a dynamic element to the decor but also thrive in the well-drained conditions provided by the shelf’s design.
For the Smaller Section: The smaller section features a custom-made succulent propagation tray, perfect for enthusiasts looking to grow their succulent collection. This area can be used to propagate new succulent cuttings, such as those from Echeveria, Sedum, or Graptopetalum. The presence of a drain tray in this section also aids in managing moisture levels, crucial for the successful rooting and growth of new plants. This setup allows plant lovers to observe the fascinating process of succulent propagation, adding an educational twist to the decorative appeal of the shelf.
Both sections of the shelf are crafted to not only display plants attractively but also to support their growth and health, making the cloud-shaped plant shelf a perfect union of form and function.
